MRI – The radiation-free view inside the body

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic procedure that provides sharp cross-sectional images, particularly of soft tissues, without any exposure to X-rays. Instead, the images are created using a strong magnetic field and electromagnetic radiation. Magnetic coils are positioned around the table with the patient inside the scanner tube to generate the magnetic field. A high-performance computer then converts all the data into cross-sectional images.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was discovered in the 1950s. However, it was initially used primarily in the fields of chemistry and physics. It wasn't until the mid-1990s that it was also applied in medicine.

MRI – WHY ARE MRI SCREENINGS SO IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY FOR BACK PATIENTS

The patient lies relaxed on a comfortable surface. They are slowly moved into the scanner. Headphones dampen all distracting noises. A short time later, the images of the spine appear sharply on the monitor. With a few mouse clicks, the doctor can penetrate deeper into the tissue, layer by layer. Using a computer, they navigate through the spine like in a science fiction film, searching for abnormalities. All of this is completely painless for the patient.

The spinal cord, spinal nerves, intervertebral discs, and muscles are particularly well visualized. Therefore, MRI is often used to diagnose herniated discs and spinal stenosis.

Additional information is obtained by processing the MRI images on a computer. This allows for the creation of 3D representations, for example of the spinal canal.
